Research shortlisted for the 2010 MS Society Awards April 12, 2010
Posted by msfirstadmin in : Research , trackbackThe tremor research carried out at the MS Research Unit has been shortlisted for the 2010 MS Society Awards in two categories.
The MS Research Team, who carried out the tremor project at Bristol General Hospital, have been shortlisted for the “Best MS Research Project” award by Steve and Dawn Wood.
Laurence Ketteringham was also shortlisted for the “MS Researcher of the Year” award by Rita Holme.
The MS Society Awards will be made at a ceremony on 22 April 2010, at the Royal Garden Hotel, Kensington High Street, London.
The tremor project combined a newly available commercial movement measurement system with novel software. This enabled accurate recordings of movement and tremor to be taken from the upper limbs of subjects with MS and intention tremor, while they carried out a set of functional movements. Recordings of subjects without tremor were also taken for comparison.
Those working on this project included Rosie Jones, Angela Davies Smith from the MS Research Unit, and Laurence Ketteringham, Simon Neild and Rick Hyde from the University of Bristol.
The data gathered from this project formed the core of the data used, and further analysed, by Laurence in his PhD thesis. The analyses pointed towards the possibility of a tremor reduction device for the arm.
These findings lead to a further funding opportunity, and a follow-up project is underway to continue this research and discover the effects that an external tremor reduction device would have when placed on the arm.
